Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh established the Animal Welfare Society on Guru Nanak Dev University campus

Amritsar, March 11, 2025Under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, the university is proud to establish the Animal Welfare Society on campus. This initiative reflects GNDU’s commitment to fostering a compassionate and responsible approach to animal welfare while promoting a holistic learning environment. Speaking about this initiative, Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh stated that by taking forward the eternal message of “Sarbat da Bhalla”-the well-being of all-given by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in whose name this great institution is established, the University continues to uphold its legacy of service and social responsibility. This endeavor is being undertaken with the valuable guidance of Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, a distinguished Indian politician and animal rights advocate. To ensure its effective implementation, GNDU is collaborating with Animal Welfare and Care Services (AWCS), a registered non-profit organization in India and Canada, founded by Dr.Navneet Kaur Chatrath in 2020. AWCS has been actively engaged in mitigating animal-human conflicts through awareness programs, sterilization, and vaccination campaigns across educational institutions. The Animal Welfare Society at GNDU will be looked after by Prof. Subheet Jain along with other faculty of the University and will provide a structured platform for students, faculty, and staff to contribute actively to the welfare of animals on campus. Under this initiative: · Students will have the opportunity to participate annually and can connect with the designated head/mentor of the society. · The society will take responsibility for the well-being of campus animals, including food, shelter, medical assistance, and efficient birth control measures. Efforts will be made to minimize conflicts between residents and community animals while fostering harmony. · Seminars and workshops will be organized featuring experts discussing the environmental and ethical importance of animal welfare. ·Members will also have opportunities to volunteer at AWCS shelters and receive certificates for their contributions. This initiative, envisioned and led by Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, marks yet another step in GNDU’s commitment to social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and value-based education. By engaging students and faculty in this noble cause, the university continues to shape a campus culture rooted in empathy, service, and holistic development. We encourage all interested individuals to join this meaningful initiative and contribute to a more humane and compassionate world.
