While reiterating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s unwavering support for farmers’ demands, Sandhwan emphasized the adverse effects of prolonged road blockades on Punjab’s economy, industry, and employment opportunities for the youth. “The people of Punjab and the state government have always stood with the farmers, whether it was during the fight against the three black laws or the Modi government’s plan to turn stadiums into prisons for farmers. However, the continuous closure of highways has caused significant harm to Punjab. Our industries, businesses, and youth are suffering,” said Sandhwan. He highlighted that road closures are preventing industrial growth and trade, which are essential for creating jobs and curbing the menace of drugs. “Punjab’s fight against drugs cannot succeed by just arresting or punishing smugglers; we must also provide employment opportunities for our youth. When young people are employed, they will naturally stay away from drugs,” he added.Sandhwan stressed the need to keep Punjab’s highways open to ensure the smooth movement of goods and raw materials, which are critical for boosting agro-based industries and the economy. “We are already witnessing losses. For instance, basmati rice prices dropped significantly last year, causing huge financial losses to farmers and traders. Similarly, road closures have impacted vegetable growers and small businesses,” he said.Appealing directly to farmer unions, he said, “Your demands, such as MSP, are valid but are related to the Central Government. We request you to take your struggle to Delhi and hold protests against the BJP government there. Let us keep Punjab’s highways and trade routes open so that our industries and economy can grow.
